Friday Five Tool Five (Dec. 31)

Introducing the Friday Five Tool Five. National Scouting Director of Five Tool Drew Bishop gives out thoughts and information on Five Topics on his mind. This new segment will be a weekly occurrence.

In today’s installment of the Friday Five Tool Five we recap the Alex Bregman episode of the podcast, talk about some upcoming podcast content ideas, and highlight two uncommitted 2023s.

1. Episode 30 of the Five Tool Podcast with Houston Astro Alex Bregman

Dustin McComas and I were lucky enough to have Alex Bregman as a guest on our podcast last week and got to dive in to his rehab, charity work, and just talk some baseball. It was fun to hear Alex describe the rehab process and any listener can easily tell that his detailed preparation plays a large role in what makes him the caliber big leaguer that he is. It is impossible to miss the love for the game that Bregman possesses when he talks about different ballparks and talks in detail about the people that have played a role in his baseball life dating back to his pre-high school days in Albuquerque.

One of the main components of our interview centered around the work he and his wife, Reagan, do for the Houston charity scene. His foundation, Bregman Cares, is responsible for improving the holidays for numerous schoolchildren throughout the Houston area, doing yeoman’s work for kids with Autism by providing iPads to schools, and singling out individuals who just need a break. Alex and his wife definitely understand the platform he is provided as a Major League player and through their generosity, make a huge difference for the better in the community. Kudos to the Bregmans for their selfless service.

Alex and his wife are also very active in their business ventures. Connecting with his New Mexico roots, Bregman helped create Breggy Bomb Salsa which can be found online at BreggyBomb.com and in HEB and Kroger stores. His wife, Reagan, also has her own athleisure line called Exiza. We look forward to having Alex back on the podcast down the road and talking more baseball with the number two pick in the 2015 MLB draft.

2. Upcoming Podcast Content Ideas

Dustin and I have been kicking around different ideas for some January and February content for the listeners to be looking for. We are planning to have multiple guests on and are going to be doing special episodes on the following topics:

-Drafting our own teams from the 2022 and 2023 #FiveTool55 lists

-Drafting teams from D1 schools in Texas and/or surrounding states with D1Baseball.com’s Kendall Rogers

-Covering and previewing preseason polls for Texas high school baseball

-Multiple guests including D1 Head  Coaches, Assistant Coaches, and various other baseball specific figures

As always, if you have any ideas for episodes, feel free to send them our way. We are interested to hear the topics people want to have covered.

3. UNCOMMITED SPOTLIGHT

Cole Johnson | 2023 CIF| Lake Travis HS | Lonestar Baseball Club

One of the most intriguing power bats in the 2023 class in Texas resides in Lake Travis. A member of our inaugural @FivetoolGPA team, Cole had a strong showing at the Arizona Fall Classic. After leading a loaded Lake Travis team in hitting in 2021, Cole is poised to add power to his numbers in 2022. With an already advanced approach at the plate, adding power numbers to his resume makes him a very coveted option for D1 schools across the country. In just a short time with Cole at the AZFC, you could tell he is a student of the game who pays attention to how pitchers try to pitch him and even was able to steal some bases having picked up on their pitch patterns in short outings. On top of being a savvy player, Johnson takes his development very seriously by looking for ways to advance his game outside the lines whether it be in the weight room, in the cage, or with nutrition. His dedication to his craft will make his future program of choice very happy.

4. UNCOMMITTED SPOTLIGHT

Ethan Glaze | 2023 OF | Clear Lake HS | C2 Baseball

Another member of the inaugural @FivetoolGPA team, Ethan Glaze has speed to burn. Over the course of the tournament, Ethan stole close to double digit bases in a five game span. With solid contact throughout the event, Ethan knows how to use his best tool finding his way on base and creating chaos for pitchers having to worry about him taking the next base. A plus baserunner already, Ethan has the chance to become even more of a threat on the bases as he continues to get better and better with his jumps. Ethan’s best baseball is in front of him with a frame that will easily allow him to add weight while keeping his sub-6.5 speed. With what is already a solid repertoire offensively, that added weight will allow him to put balls in the gap to add doubles and triples to his stat lines. A plus defender at this stage, Ethan profiles to be a big time player at the next level.

5. Five Tool News: Happy New Year

Just wanted to take a minute to wish everyone a Happy New Year for 2022! My family has enjoyed all of the support we have gotten from the Five Tool community and I look forward to getting out in the spring and watching as many kids as we can play. Dustin and I are going to be making the rounds to provide coverage along with the amazing content that Five Tool has already produced in the past. Anything that we can do to better help serve the baseball community, please don’t hesitate to reach out and let us know so that we can help provide value for you as a parent or player.
